Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Leader of the Senate and APC’s Ekiti Central Senator, has categorically stated that President Bola Tinubu is not coercing opposition lawmakers to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Bamidele made this clarification during a Senate session where Senators Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki from Kebbi State formally announced their defection to the APC. Bamidele emphasized that the defectors’ decision was voluntary, driven by their desire to join the APC’s “government of national unity.” He praised their decision, highlighting their experience and conviction.
Bamidele contrasted the APC’s approach with the PDP’s alleged tactics when they were in power, suggesting that the PDP had previously used coercion to lure defectors. The defectors include seasoned politicians like Senator Adamu Aliero, a former Governor of Kebbi State and Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, a former Leader of the Senate. Bamidele argued that their decision to join the APC is a testament to the party’s growing appeal. The defection is seen as a significant boost to the APC, with Bamidele expressing optimism that it will ultimately benefit Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of putting national interests above party affiliations.
Bamidele called on lawmakers to work together for Nigeria’s progress, regardless of party affiliations. He dismissed criticism of the current parliament as a “rubber stamp,” emphasizing the need for collaboration at this critical stage of Nigeria’s development.
